The history of the
Wine family Albert Mathier
& Sons

The Mathiers came to Salgesch in 1387. Originating from Marseille, they migrated to Switzerland via Grenoble. The reason was poverty and the possibility of earning money abroad as mercenaries. Thus, the Mathiers enlisted for military service in the Valais and, after completing their duty, decided not to return to their homeland but to settle in Salgesch. Soon they discovered that the area was ideal for growing grapes. And found that a good glass of wine is far more beneficial to life than warfare.

Albert Mathier – as the name suggests founder of Albert Mathier & Söhne AG – was born in 1891 as the second of nine children. In 1918 he married Monika. Five children were born of this marriage. When the world economy was down, the family tried to weather the recession by clearing fields and meadows and planting vines. With their press house, they laid the foundation for their own wine history and that of the red wine metropolis of Salgesch.
